What Is a Mini Split (Ductless AC) System?

A mini split system is an air conditioner that doesn’t need ducts. An outdoor compressor unit connects to one or more indoor air-handling units through a small refrigerant line and electrical wire — usually run through a 3-inch hole in the wall. That’s it. No major renovation. No demolition.

They come in two main types. A single-zone system cools one room or area. A multi-zone system has one outdoor unit connected to two, three, or even four indoor heads — perfect for cooling an entire older home that was never built for ductwork, or for adding AC to specific problem areas without touching the rest of your house.

Most mini splits also provide heat, which matters on Long Island. Winters aren’t severe, but having backup heat can lower your heating bills and give you comfort during shoulder seasons. And because Long Island electricity rates are high, mini splits are built to be efficient — most deliver 18–25 SEER, which means lower monthly bills.

How AJ Services Installs Your Mini Split

We start with a free assessment. Our technician looks at the room or rooms you want to cool, checks electrical capacity, and recommends a system size. Bigger doesn’t mean better — oversized systems short-cycle (turn on, cool fast, shut off before dehumidifying), which wastes energy. We size it right.

Once you approve, we schedule installation. We run the refrigerant line and electrical wire through the wall, mount the indoor head, install the outdoor unit on a pad or bracket (usually on the side of your house or roof), and hook everything up. We pull permits as needed — yes, Nassau County requires them, and we handle that. We test the system, make sure it’s cooling properly, and show you how to use the controls. Most single-zone installations take a day. Multi-zone systems take longer because we’re mounting multiple heads.

After installation, we always recommend annual maintenance — a filter cleaning and coil check keeps your system running at peak efficiency, especially in Long Island’s humid summers when coils get dirty faster.

Is a Mini Split Right for You?

  • You have a room, addition, or finished basement with no AC
  • Central air doesn’t reach certain rooms (second floor, far end of house)
  • You’re finishing a basement, attic, or garage
  • You want room-by-room temperature control
  • You want to replace noisy, inefficient window units
  • You want an AC that also heats (most mini splits do both)
  • You want a quieter alternative to window units
  • Your older home doesn’t have ductwork (many 1950s–70s Bellmore and Merrick homes don’t)

We offer genuine 24/7 emergency service. And we don’t push what you don’t need. If a window unit would work, we’ll say so. If a mini split is the right call, we’ll explain why.

We repair mini splits too. If your system breaks down, we’re here to fix it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a single-zone and multi-zone mini split?

A single-zone system has one indoor head connected to one outdoor unit. It cools one space — a bedroom, office, finished basement. A multi-zone system has one outdoor unit powering two, three, or four indoor heads. Each head can be set to a different temperature. Multi-zone is perfect if you want zone control throughout your home without replacing your whole AC system.

Can a mini split heat my home in winter too?

Most mini splits are heat pumps, which means they both cool and heat. In winter, they pull heat from outside air and move it inside. Even on cold Long Island days, there’s enough heat to extract. You’ll save on heating costs, and you won’t need a separate heater for that room or zone.

How long does mini split installation take?

A single-zone system usually takes one day. We run lines, mount the heads, and test everything. Multi-zone installations take longer because we’re wiring multiple indoor units and running separate refrigerant lines. We’ll give you a time estimate during the assessment.

Do mini splits require permits on Long Island?

Yes. Nassau County requires permits for AC installation. We pull them. It’s the right way to do it — permits protect you, and your home’s resale value depends on proper paperwork. The permit process usually takes a week or two, and we handle all the back-and-forth.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

Usually on the side of your house, on a pad or bracket. Sometimes on the roof if side placement isn’t practical. We position it away from windows so noise is minimal, and we make sure it has good airflow. We won’t block flower beds or park it where it’s in the way.

How much does mini split installation cost on Long Island?

Depends on the system — single-zone vs. multi-zone, brand, capacity, and how complex the install is. Single-zone systems range from $4,000 to $6,000 installed. Multi-zone costs more. We give free quotes. Call us at 516-807-8700 and we’ll walk you through pricing.
