The evaporator coil is where cooling happens. Air passes over the coil and heat is removed — that’s how your house gets cool. Over months and years, dust, pet hair, and household particles coat the coil. A layer of buildup, even a thin one, acts as insulation. It blocks the coil from absorbing heat efficiently. Your system has to run longer and work harder to cool the house. That costs you money.
The condenser coil is in the outdoor unit. Its job is to reject heat to the outside air. A filthy condenser coil can’t release heat properly. Pressure builds up inside the system. The high-pressure switch triggers a lockout and the system shuts itself off to prevent compressor damage. You lose cooling. On Long Island, especially near coastal areas, salt air corrodes the aluminum fins on the condenser coil, speeding up the damage.
A dirty evaporator coil is also a mold and bacteria breeding ground. The coil gets wet as it removes moisture from the air (that’s how air gets less humid). What are the signs of dirty AC coils?
Reduced cooling, longer run times, higher electric bills, ice forming on the refrigerant line, musty or moldy smell from vents, and the outdoor unit running very hot. If your system used to cool faster, dirty coils are often the reason.
Can dirty coils make my house humid even when the AC is running?
Yes. A dirty evaporator coil removes less moisture from the air. Your house gets cool but stays damp. This is especially noticeable on Long Island where humidity is already high. A clean coil removes 30% more moisture per BTU of cooling.
Why does my AC smell musty?
