Your air conditioner isn’t cooling as well as it used to. Or maybe your vents smell musty. Chances are your coils are dirty. Dust, pollen, pet hair, and debris build up on the evaporator coil inside your home and the condenser coil outside. Even a thin layer of gunk acts like insulation and blocks heat transfer. The result is less cooling, longer run times, and higher electric bills. AJ Services cleans AC systems across Long Island. We restore efficiency and eliminate odors.
The evaporator coil is where cooling happens. Air passes over the coil and heat is removed — that’s how your house gets cool. Over months and years, dust, pet hair, and household particles coat the coil. A layer of buildup, even a thin one, acts as insulation. It blocks the coil from absorbing heat efficiently. Your system has to run longer and work harder to cool the house. That costs you money.
The condenser coil is in the outdoor unit. Its job is to reject heat to the outside air. A filthy condenser coil can’t release heat properly. Pressure builds up inside the system. The high-pressure switch triggers a lockout and the system shuts itself off to prevent compressor damage. You lose cooling. On Long Island, especially near coastal areas, salt air corrodes the aluminum fins on the condenser coil, speeding up the damage.
A dirty evaporator coil is also a mold and bacteria breeding ground. The coil gets wet as it removes moisture from the air (that’s how air gets less humid). If the coil is clogged, algae and mold grow on it and in the drain pan below it. When you turn on the AC, the blower wheel blows that smell throughout the house. It’s not just unpleasant — it can be a health issue for people with respiratory problems or allergies.
A system cleaning is deeper than a tune-up. We apply professional-grade coil cleaner to the evaporator coil, flush it, and rinse it thoroughly. We do the same to the condenser coil outside, plus we clean the aluminum fins. We clean and disinfect the condensate drain pan. We flush the drain line to clear algae and debris. We also clean the blower wheel and the air handler cabinet.
For coastal Long Island homes, we apply a corrosion-inhibiting coating to the condenser coil to slow salt air damage. The whole job takes 2–3 hours. Your system will run quieter, cool faster, and use less energy.
We’ve cleaned thousands of AC systems across Nassau County. We understand the local climate and the wear it puts on equipment. Salt air, high humidity, and hard-working summers take a toll. We know which systems are at highest risk and what’s worth cleaning versus what’s worth replacing. We’re based in Bellmore, family-owned, licensed, and insured in New York.
We also offer honest advice. If your coils are corroded beyond cleaning, we’ll tell you. If cleaning will add years to your system’s life, we’ll recommend it. We don’t sell services you don’t need.
How often should AC coils be cleaned?
Every 2–3 years for most Long Island homes. Homes with pets, near salt air, or with excessive dust should clean annually. If you’re doing an annual tune-up, adding a coil cleaning every 2–3 years is smart maintenance.
What are the signs of dirty AC coils?
Reduced cooling, longer run times, higher electric bills, ice forming on the refrigerant line, musty or moldy smell from vents, and the outdoor unit running very hot. If your system used to cool faster, dirty coils are often the reason.
Can dirty coils make my house humid even when the AC is running?
Yes. A dirty evaporator coil removes less moisture from the air. Your house gets cool but stays damp. This is especially noticeable on Long Island where humidity is already high. A clean coil removes 30% more moisture per BTU of cooling.
Why does my AC smell musty?
Mold or algae growing on the evaporator coil and drain pan. This happens when moisture sits on a dirty coil. The coil and pan are the perfect breeding ground. Cleaning the coil and drain line removes the smell and kills the mold.
Is coil cleaning covered under a maintenance plan or tune-up?
A standard tune-up includes coil inspection but not deep cleaning. A full coil cleaning is an upgrade. Some maintenance plans include one cleaning every few years. Ask about AJ Services’ maintenance plan options when you call.
How long does AC coil cleaning take?
Usually 2–3 hours, depending on how dirty the coils are and whether the drain line needs significant flushing. We’ll give you a time estimate before we start.
