Your mini split isn’t cooling. Or it’s making a weird noise. Or there’s an error code you don’t understand. It’s hot, and you need it fixed fast.
AJ Services repairs all brands of mini split systems. We diagnose the problem quickly and fix most issues the same day. Read on to see what we typically find — and when to call us.
Mini splits are reliable. But they’re not maintenance-free. The most common issues are refrigerant leaks (system blows warm air and loses cooling), dirty filters or coils (weak airflow and reduced efficiency), error codes (sensor faults, pressure problems, or communication errors between the indoor and outdoor unit), ice buildup (means the indoor coil is frozen, usually from low refrigerant or a clogged filter), and compressor failure (rare, but serious if it happens).
On Long Island’s south shore — places like Wantagh and Seaford — salt air corrodes outdoor unit coil fins and refrigerant connections faster than inland homes. That’s a local factor. If you’re near the water and your system is 8–10 years old, corrosion could be creeping in. Regular maintenance catches it early.
Error codes are your system’s way of telling you something’s wrong. Different brands use different codes (E1, E4, F3, etc.), but they all point to a specific issue — low refrigerant pressure, a bad sensor, or a communication glitch between units. Don’t ignore a blinking light. Problems that seem small (a slow leak) become compressor failures if left alone. We read the codes and diagnose from there.
We start by getting the error code (if there is one) and listening to you describe what’s happening. Then our technician tests the system — checks refrigerant pressure, coil temperature, electrical connections, and airflow. Within an hour, we usually know what’s wrong.
Most common repairs — a refrigerant top-up, a capacitor replacement, a filter cleaning, a clogged drain line — we fix on the spot. More complex problems like a faulty compressor or a cracked coil mean we’ll talk about repair vs. replacement. If it’s worth fixing, we’ll do it. If replacement makes more sense, we’ll be honest about that too.
We’re here 24/7. If your mini split dies at 2 AM on a Sunday in July, call us. We’ll send a technician who can handle it.
We’re family-owned, licensed, and insured. We’ve been here 20+ years, so we know what breaks and how to fix it fast. We don’t upsell repairs you don’t need. We explain what’s wrong in plain language.
We also know that prevention beats repair. If you maintain your mini split — annual filter cleaning and coil check — most common problems never happen. Talk to us about a tune-up plan.
Why is my mini split running but not cooling?
Several reasons. Low refrigerant (usually a slow leak), a clogged filter or coil blocking airflow, a frozen indoor coil, or a faulty compressor. We test to narrow it down. Most of the time it’s a refrigerant top-up or a clean filter. Sometimes it’s more involved.
What do error codes on my mini split mean?
Error codes vary by brand, but they indicate a specific failure — low pressure, a sensor fault, electrical issues, or a communication error between units. We look up the code and diagnose from there. Don’t ignore it. Error codes tell you something needs attention.
Why is my mini split making a hissing noise?
Hissing usually means a refrigerant leak. The hiss is refrigerant escaping. A small leak might not affect cooling right away, but it’ll get worse. Call us to check. If there’s a leak, we find it, fix it, and recharge the system.
Why is there ice on my mini split?
Ice on the indoor coil or outdoor unit means the coil temperature has dropped below freezing. Usually caused by low refrigerant or a clogged filter starving the coil of air. Turn the system off and let it thaw for an hour, then check the filter. If it’s clogged, clean it. If the filter is clean, you likely have a refrigerant leak. Call us.
Can mini splits be repaired, or do they need full replacement?
Most repairs are fixable. Capacitors, contactors, refrigerant recharges, valve replacements — these are all repairable and much cheaper than replacing the whole unit. A compressor failure is more serious. If the compressor is dead, replacement often makes sense. We’ll give you both costs and help you decide.
How much does mini split repair cost on Long Island?
Depends on what’s wrong. A filter cleaning is cheap. A refrigerant top-up is moderate. A compressor replacement is expensive. We charge a diagnostic fee that gets credited toward the repair if you approve the work. Call for a quote: 516-807-8700.
